Lion of Saint Mark
Copper engraving depicting the winged Lion of Saint Mark. This is the sculpture that can be seen atop the column in the Piazzetta San Marco, near Saint Mark’s Square. This lion has a long history, probably beginning as a winged lion on a monument to the god Sandon in Tarsus, Cilicia (southern Turkey) around 300 BC.
