Santa Maria della Saluteย (English:ย Saint Mary of Health), commonly known simply as theย Salute, is aย Roman Catholicย church andย minor basilicalocated in theย Dorsoduroย sestiereย of the Italian city ofย Venice. It stands on a narrow finger of land between theย Grand Canalย and theย Bacino di San Marcoย making the church visible when entering theย Piazza San Marcoย from the water.
In 1630, Venice experienced an unusually devastating outbreak of theย plague. As a votive offering for the cityโs deliverance from the pestilence, theย Republic of Veniceย vowed to build and dedicate a church to Our Lady of Health (or of Deliverance,ย Italian:ย Salute). The church was designed in the then fashionable baroque style byย Baldassare Longhena, who studied under the architectย Vincenzo Scamozzi. Construction began in 1631. Most of the objects of art housed in the church bear references to theย Black Death.
The dome of theย Saluteย was an important addition to the Venice skyline and soon became emblematic of the city
